Not a Phase

How do you love me?
Can you count the ways? The days?
How long before I’m only a phase?
Before you’re full of contempt and resent my teary face?
Because life’s never been easy
And people lack grace

Do you really and truly love me?
Do you have compassion to spare?
Do you care?
About my thoughts, my heart
Would you ever even dare?
Because love may be beautiful
But life’s not fair

So, I wouldn’t fault you for walking away
And I don’t blame you for the games you play
It’s okay
You can leave me tomorrow and plan it today
Because love may be blind
But real love’s not a phase

Written on a night when I was struggling with rejection
